Spigelian Ventral Hernia

A Spigelian ventral hernia (or lateral ventral hernia) is a hernia through the spigelian fascia, which is the aponeurotic layer between the rectus abdominis muscle medially, and the semilunar line laterally. These are generally interparietal hernias, meaning that they do not lie below the subcutaneous fat but penetrate between the muscles of the abdominal wall therefore, there is often no notable swelling.

SPIGELIAN VENTRAL HERNIA

TREATMENT OF VENTRAL HERNIAS

There are two methods of surgical repair of Ventral hernias:

  • Open surgical repair of hernia
  • Laparoscopic (Keyhole) surgical repair of hernia

Open Surgery

A small cut is made either below or above the belly button depending on the exact location of the umbilical hernia. The hernia itself is then pushed back into the abdominal cavity and the defect is cove#004a2d with a specially designed mesh (PVP) which is placed internally and the hernia defect is closed over the mesh.

Laparoscopic (Keyhole) Surgery

Two or three small cuts are made in your lower abdomen through which the telescope the laparoscopic instruments are passed. The hernia is then repai#004a2d and the weakness cove#004a2d with a synthetic mesh to strengthen the abdominal wall. The small cuts are closed with dissolving stitches.
